Understanding storage units is an important computer literacy skill. Every file on a computer, whether it is a document, picture, music file, or video, occupies storage space measured using different storage units. Before we proceed with today's lesson, complete the following activity:
- Open File Explorer on your computer.
- Locate any file (such as a Word document, picture, PDF, or video).
- Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Observe the Size (and Size on disk) displayed in the Properties window.
You will notice that the file size is shown as a number followed by a storage unit, such as Bytes (B), Kilobytes (KB), Megabytes (MB), or Gigabytes (GB).
Think about these questions:
- What storage unit is used to measure the size of your file?
- Why do different files have different sizes?
- What do these units (KB, MB, GB, etc.) represent?
